Darnielle performs for a crowd in New York. Tweed blazer, woolen sweater. Black, thick-rimmed glasses, khaki slacks. Leather shoes, matching socks. A college professor? Hardly. He’s an indie rock star. A self-proclaimed “diva”, John Darnielle, the heart and soul of The Mountain Goats, has influenced faithful followers of low-fi indie music for more than 15 years with little more than his voice, a guitar, and a steady rotation of back-up musicians. His first widely released album, Zopilote Machine, was released in 1994, and his next 10 albums, each progressively more high-quality,... Read more

Every student enrolled in an honor’s science course is required to put together a science fair project. However some students take science fair to a whole new level. The science fair symposium is an event where selected students from the various high schools of Indiana are presented with the chance to present their projects in a competition format. It’s not Harry Potter. It’s not Eragon. It’s something in between both of these hit novels. It’s The Alchemyst. The story of two teenagers learning that magic is real. Sound familiar? Yep, sort of like Harry Potter isn’t it? A boy who learns that magic is real, and he soon becomes a part of the magical world. The Alchemyst by Michael Scott involves twins, Sophie and Josh Newman. They are starting their summers off with part-time jobs, and they work across the street from one another. How convenient. Their bosses go by the names Nick and Perry Fleming, but soon havoc breaks loose and their... Read more

Students read announcements on the new TV screen in the commons. The screen was purchased for this purpose, and its uses will be expanded as the school year progresses. Two weeks ago, a group of Blades A/V employees installed a flat screen TV in the commons as befuddled students passed by. Intended to display special announcements to students entering the school and during lunches, this is the first time a TV has been used on such a large scale to inform students in the commons. Assistant principal Dan Swafford sees the TV being especially helpful in the morning. “It’s one more way to distribute... Read more

Mill Stream: How did you injure your knee, and what was the extent of the injury? Matt Cooley: The summer before my sophomore year at a football practice, I was playing quarterback, and after I made a pass, I went to lead block. I jumped over a guy on the ground, and my foot landed in a sprinkler hole on the other side. My weight shifted, and I ended up tearing my ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL, my lateral meniscus, both of my bicep tendons, and my perinial nerve. I have five inches of dead nerve, and permanent foot drop. MS: What were your goals/feelings about the season before your injury? MC: To... Read more
