It’s cool to be cheap

Let’s face it: There’s a certain laid-back coolness to being cheap. Although I don’t claim to be cool, I am definitely cheap. Really cheap. Last week, I waltzed into the local Goodwill and bought a dress, two shirts, and a skirt for a grand total of $8.63. And I was proud of it. I specifically remember telling my dad when I was little that he couldn’t dress me in someone else’s old clothes, but after working two jobs for four years, I’ve come to recognize the real value of a dollar. I went through a short phase where I regularly bought $50 jeans with heaps of tip money (once I even... Read more

The essence of homecoming

Right now is the time of year when the homecoming frenzy starts to begin. Everyone rushes around looking for dates and buying tickets for the dance, arrangements are made for rides to the football game, and things just take on a sense of urgency. It all gets pretty hectic for high schoolers around this time, and I believe we get lost in all this chaos. We get too caught up in homecoming issues; we just plain get overstressed. We lose the essence of homecoming. Not many people stop to think about this, what the essence of homecoming really is. I think it’s really about the inner child. Everyone’s... Read more

Many people may think that it is just a title, but the Noblesville High School student body president is actually in charge of many of the school functions and the overall success of the events that take place at NHS. This year’s student body president is senior Luke Hoffman. Students may think that anyone could obtain and maintain the position, but along with the title goes much hard work and diligence. He has been involved in student government his whole high school career, as a senator for three years, and this year he decided to take on the responsibility of student body president. The student... Read more

Their guts make Hercules look sheepish. They’re the Girls Cross Country Team, and this year, they’re a force for other schools to fear. “They’re one of the strongest teams I’ve ever had,” Head Coach Mr. Dennis Scheele said. And after 25 years of coaching, this statement is saying something. According to www.indianarunner.com, the girls cross country team currently ranks fourth in the state, trailing... Read more

Spices, yoga, Deepak Chopra, and Bollywood. Many cultures abound in the halls of the school. The slowly increasing Indian population in the student body will help students learn more about this culture. The Indian population is very prevalent on the east and west coasts, but not in Central Indiana. Most of the students in school are first generation Americans. Indian culture is a mix of modern and traditional values. They have a very strong sense of family and friendship. In fact, a family unit consists of children (students), parents, and grandparents living under one roof. Indians can be Catholic,... Read more

Marching to the State Fair

When summer hits everyone takes off on vacation, hangs out with friends, and just relaxes. For a couple of other students they only have two things on their mind — marching band and state fair. “You really have to pour your heart into band.” Sophomore, Jessica Turner said. Several days before band camp marchers started hydrating and checking their instruments for problems. If one person was not prepared for the hot days of camp the whole band would suffer. “Band camp is hard but it’s awesome!” junior Kathryn Welder said. During the days of band camp the marchers went... Read more

Every year the rumor circulates. “I heard Mr. Hitchcock is going to retire.” At the end of the last school year, however, this rumor was a definite truth: Social studies teacher Mr. Bruce Hitchcock was finished teaching. Yet another rumor began as soon as the last one was laid to rest. “He’s continuing his teaching only for certain classes”; yet during the first week of classes, Hitchcock was mysteriously absent. So, what’s the hitch? “I was ready not to be here every day but not ready to not be here any day,” Hitchcock said. Put simply, Hitchcock,... Read more

Fingers swiftly striking keys. Send. Text messaging has rapidly become a vital form of communication for high schoolers. Whether at lunch, on the bus, or even during movies, students’ phones seem to never leave them. It’s no secret that cell phones are nearing the point of necessity in modern society. Sure, technology has come a long way, but just how much is too much? Text messages are used for just about everything. Someone can find out when soccer practice starts, what the Spanish assignment is, or even whether the new Boys Like Girls album will be worth listening to. However, at some... Read more

Noblesville earns students and a good reputation

Every year schools around America gain a few new students and lose some old ones. This year Noblesville High School gained three students who all came from the same place. Two of which are no strangers to its hallways. Both junior Taylor Mckiernan and junior Austin Mace have attended Noblesville Schools, but after eighth grade they enrolled at Guerin Catholic High School. Their reasons for leaving Guerin and returning to Noblesville were almost, if not exactly, the same. Sami Brown, the third new student, attended Our Lady of Grace before she enrolled at Guerin Catholic High School, but now she... Read more

For those who have yet to pick up a guitar, the concept of performing in little over a month is positively terrifying. Even those who have some experience feel slight trepidation. Students in Guitar 1 class, instructed by music teacher Jason Jasper, must face this fear while playing at their first concert on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The Guitarists will play a selection of songs learned in class and practiced outside of it. Some students have already familiarized themselves with the guitar and are taking the class because they would like to learn more about the instrument.... Read more
