The Last Song is a harmonious tune

After the ridiculously mediocre quality of Nichols Sparks’ books-turned-movies Nights in Rodanthe and Dear John, I was becoming a bit of a cynic. The first three (Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, and The Notebook) had been so great; where was the spark (pardon the pun) I had felt watching those dramatic romances unfold on screen? Consequently, I hesitated when I saw the preview for the Last Song, which stars Disney’s sweetheart Miley Cyrus. Yet I was drawn in by the music, beach setting–a Sparks trademark, and, I hate to admit, the attractiveness of the male lead. In the... Read more

On Friday, March 26, the girls’ track and field team competed against Fishers at home. The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed due to rain. Noblesville swept Fishers with a final score of 105-36. Noblesville claimed the top three spots in several different events – 100 M hurdles, 100 M dash, 1600 M run, pole vault, and the 800 M run. Additionally, first place slots were taken by Ali Charles in the 200 M run, Kendra Foley in the 3200 M run, Isabelle May in shot put and discus, and Katey Pahud in high jump. The springtime blues

It seems obvious that in the middle of such a happy-go-lucky time of year – when blossoms are blooming, couples are courting, and spring break is so, so close – no one should be in an eternal bad mood. However, I would beg to differ. Although I adore springtime and exchanging my winter coat and socks for a light jacket and flip-flops, this particular spring has me bitter. And I’m willing to bet I’m not alone on that. By mid-October, I was convinced that the senioritis bug couldn’t bite me. I was already accepted to college, and my participation in class didn’t falter.... Read more

Photo from http://movies.nytimes.com In Susie Salmon’s heaven, she sees the things she loves about Earth. In the trippy movie interpretation, this means a world where different biomes meet; the beach, the forest, and the mountains are all within feet of each other. However, despite the beauty she is subject to, she can’t get Earth off her mind. In fact, rather than embracing her afterlife, she spends her days in a gazebo, gazing down on her family. She is trying to speak to them, to make them realize the truth. The truth is, Susie was murdered. The Lovely Bones, a novel by Alice Sebold,... Read more

Charlyne Yi doesn’t believe in love. There’s no real reasoning behind it; she hasn’t experienced any earth-shattering breakup or betrayal. She’s simply come to the conclusion that love is a figment of the imagination, an element of fairy tales and romance novels that doesn’t relate to the real world. So along with friend and director Nick Jasenovec, she goes on a road trip through the U.S.A. talking with all kinds of peoples, getting their perceptions on this thing called love. However, once Yi meets Michael Cera (Juno), all her beliefs on love’s existence... Read more

Noblesville citizens think little of 2012

Story by: Reed Stoerck, grade 9 Many theories are circulating right now about whether or not on December 21, 2012, the world will end in some spectacular fashion. From copious amounts of television and media coverage, to a feature film, 2012 is having quite an affect on today’s culture. The most common and accepted theory among believers and the one featured in the film is that the Mayans, an ancient Central American civilization, created a calendar that predicted the end of the world. This is true, as well as the part about the calendar ending on the aforementioned date. The mainstream... Read more

Travel sports getting out of control

Story by: Megan Schillinger, grade 9 Home one weekend and gone the next, teenagers in travel sports are constantly on the move. Travel sports, such as soccer and hockey, require a lot of dedication. The prevalence of travel sports has spun out of control. “Last season I went to Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, and Georgia,” Louree Johnston, a member of the Hoosier Futbol Club, said. Although Johnston said that sometimes traveling is worth it, in other situations it is not. Getting home late on Sunday nights often affects her study time. On the other hand, Emmy Green, cheerleader... Read more

Sophomore Jacqueline Loudermilk participates in the scooter race during the Miller Kick Off. Each AL chose a representative to be a part of the race; the winning AL will get a pizza party later this semester. Scooter races, hot dogs, and a few dozen upperclassmen showing off their best dance moves. If you’re in the class of 2013, you know exactly what that means: Miller Kick Off. Over 400 freshmen showed up for the program, held Aug. 4. However, a lot has changed since the Miller Kick Off Mentors (MKOM) program’s opening in 2008. Freshman campus counselor Kathy Queen started the program... Read more
