Q&A with the subs

Almost every single day a sub in seen somewhere at Noblesville High School. To a student, this may be a good thing or a bad thing. However, when Mrs. Swank or Mrs. Irfan is walking through the halls, it is normally a very good thing, for these two people are very familiar faces to the students at NHS. But why do these teachers sub? What is it that makes them “tick”? And most importantly, what motivates them to tolerate so many hundreds of students? 1.) What’s your experience with teaching? How long have you been in the field of education? Swank: I was a home ec. teacher at Noblesville... Read more
On key, on the roof (or perhaps under it…)
For a majority of the student body, concerts are one of the best parts of spring and summer. One biggest challenges is finding enough money to attend. This past week, teachers and students alike have had the opportunity to enjoy a live concert a bit closer to home with the annual performance of Jazz on the Roof and the new addition of Guitars and Stars. The fifth annual Jazz on the Roof, a night of celebration of the magic of jazz music open to teachers and community members, was a bit of a different experience this time around. Instead of the typical affair of years past, Jazz on the Roof was,... Read more
Teenage love affairs: a matter of “extreme” importance

This could get real touchy real quick, but I can’t sit in silence any longer. Teenage love affairs are driving me insane. You don’t need to find the one, and you don’t need to run from him or her. You just have to let relationships fall how they may. High schoolers, today, seem to repeatedly give into the contagious fad “if we last for over a week, we must be soul-mates.” And it’s simply not true. Summer is just around the corner, and I’ll be the first to admit I’m looking for summer lovin’, but hey, it’s high school, the “golden... Read more
Art classes begin using a different kind of canvas

Because of the rennovations to the school, a huge dry wall has been created in the hallway upstairs facing north. Students from Mr. Ryan's art class have been using this as their canvas to create art. Most students have painted landscapes or portraits with bright colors and detailed drawings. Painting by Joe Coy. This particular painting is a potrait of an NHS legend, Mr. Tremain. Painting by Mikey Higgins. Students that are not in Mr. Ryan's art class have been asked to be respectful of the art and not draw, mark, or write on the wall. Some students have created big comics on... Read more
Nine things you might hear at the corner of Washington and State

I set out at around 6 a.m. with 12 of my fellow church members. We were on a mission. But we didn’t have to cross states or bodies of water. It was in our very own downtown Indianapolis. Nine simple phrases I heard during the course of the morning stood out for me because of the broader meanings behind them. Hearing the stories of the people I met that day really struck me, and their positive camaraderie was admirable. 1. “¿El café o chocolate caliente?” Asked in stiff Spanish, this was the question of the Saturday morning, Apr. 23. It was directed towards the Latino men passing... Read more
Getting all jazzed up
Imagine having the opportunity to sit in a room surrounded by friends and coffee in hand as jazz music flows through the room. While settings like this some rarely for today’s teens, they have just that opportunity on May 18 when the school puts on Jazz on the Roof, an annual jazz performance complete with a variety of instrumentalists and vocalists. Vocal auditions are currently running, and director of jazz on the Roof Jason Jasper is anticipating an excellent performance. “We always have a few vocalists along with the instrumental music for the benefit of those who are unaccustomed... Earthquake drills quake Indiana school systems

NHS students were recently floored with the news that Noblesville schools would now be participating in “earthquake drills.” Earthquakes, in Indiana at least, used to seem like a far-off threat, something only Californians and Japanese experienced. Earthquakes do happen in Indiana, however, as was proven early in the year when Indiana experienced a couple minor quakes. Since earthquake drills are not mandated by the state, the major motivating factor in the recent drill was the “Great Central U.S. Shakeout,” an earthquake drill involving several states that was created to increase awareness... Lighten up with yoga

When I first took a yoga class last June, I laughed through most of it. First, we spent a considerable amount of time working on the correct breathing tactic that the class requires. Once we got that down, we chanted some Aums (pronounced like ‘om’), which is chorus of hope and enlightenment. Then we stretched, bended, and twisted. In the end, I thought we took a nap, but it wasn’t until later that I learned that this was not nap time but rather time for individual mediation. Thinking back, my snoring must have been annoying. Since last June, I have become something of a yoga guru, and... Read more

The Noblesville Lady Miller track team participated in a trimeet on Thursday April 21 against Fishers and Laurence Central. The Millers placed third as a team. Tori Mumaw has been sweeping the field in pole vault. This is Mumaws first year doing pole vault and she has been placing in each meet. Michelle Hance sprints to the finish during the 800. Hance was apart of the state medaling 4x800 meter relay last year. Sophomore Bri Avila hands off to freshmen teammate during the 4x100 meter relay. The millers placed third and followed up by placing at the Southport relays the following Saturday. Rachel... Read more
To be AP or ACP?

To be AP or ACP? Scheduling is a rough part of the year for most students. Sitting through explanations from the counselors, filling out basic schedules for the next year, making final decisions, and changing everything multiple times is not always fun. One of the biggest concerns for students is whether or not to take an AP or ACP course. They look good on applications and can even help students save up some college credit hours However, not many students know the difference between the two. Junior Malinda Standerfer is currently in AP U.S. History. “The average day in the class is: Come in,... Read more
