Typically, one may think of physics class as a ho-hum block of nothing more than notes and lectures. However, Mr. Charles Emmert encourages his physics students to learn through experimentation. A recent annual project was just completed, the egg drop. Students were assigned to make an apparatus that was able to protect a raw egg from damage and withstand an eight-meter fall in the hallway near the main campus auditorium. The projects were dropped one at a time and students gathered below to examine whether or not their eggs would be survivors. A mess of egg yolk and shell covers the hallway in... Read more

Water for Elephants began showing in theaters on April 22. The scene is set like it is in Titanic. An elderly man, lost in a circus parking lot, shares his life story. “Ladies and gentleman welcome to the best show on earth!” Jacob Jankowski, Robert Pattinson, was in the final stretch to becoming a veterinarian. That is when a horrid accident ended all he had to come home to. Lost and looking for anything but memories, Jacob set down the railroad tracks and stumbled upon non-other, than a traveling circus. The Benzini Brothers circus had a shot at being bigger than the Ringling Brothers... Read more

Sophomores Sydney Bockoski and Isaiah Buzan participate in telling a wacky story along with the rest of the group. Senior Nik Haney gets tongue-tied while playing a game. In this game the IMPROV kids stand in a circle, start a story, and finish it going around the circle. Each person had to think fast and contribute only one word. It makes for lots of laugh and a crazy story. Senior Kathryn Overn speaks gibberish to junior Maris Feeley, trying to act out "walking on a tight rope, but instead of a rope, it's a tree." Another game that causes a room full of laughter and fun. Seniors... Read more

While many students at NHS might be doing homework or practicing a sport, other students spend time in the Chinese club learning about the oriental culture and all of the fun that goes with it. The newly formed Chinese club has many activities including learning about the Chinese culture, learning some Kung Fu, watching Chinese films, and indulging in some oriental food. “I think its a valuable chance for the students at NHS to learn about Chinese culture,” junior Yefeng Yuan said.Playing ping pong and learning Kung Fu requires more room than an average classroom, and Yuan says that the club... Genres of plays can range from slapstick comedy to sappy tragedies to witty farce like Pippin, but this year, the spring play is planning to take on a darker persona. With the production of “Marvin’s Room,” a short play full of dark comedy and serious themes, the high school theatre department provides students with a play in sharp contrast to its lighthearted comedic predecessor. Several of those auditioning for roles in Marvin’s Room are students who acted in the fall musical Pippin. Juniors Molly Grooms and, who played Catherine in Pippin, and Abby Kim, who played Berthe,... Read more

Unlike other celebrity awards shows (such as the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Grammies, and Emmies), the People’s Choice Awards are all about the people, or in other words, fans. Instead of having an “Academy” or a panel of judges to do the picking, the People’s Choice Awards enable everybody and anybody to nominate and vote for their favorites in the past year’s movies, music, and television. This year marked the 37th anniversary of this event and brought a new record of 175 million votes in over 40 different categories. Although the “people have spoken”... Read more

“I was trying to go to sleep and I heard everything rattling. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’” junior Kate L’Heureux said. She was one of the many students who awoke to an earthquake over winter break on the morning of Dec. 30 at around 8 a.m. The earthquake was ranked initially with a magnitude of 4.2, but was soon thereafter reduced to a magnitude of 3.8, according to the Associated Press, which also reveals that an earthquake of this size should feel similar to the movement of a large truck driving by. The Indianapolis Star reported that no previous records of a 3.8 magnitude earthquake... Read more

You are filling out an application for college, but you can’t think of something that you could put down to give that extra nudge to get you in. That extra “nudge” might just be getting an AP Scholar award or a National Merit award. According to one of the NHS guidance counselors, Mr. Joel Wittstein, the National Merit Scholar Award is a scholarship that juniors are eligible for if they perform well on the PSAT. Even though sophomores also take this test, they only use it for practice for the SAT. Kylie Foster, 2010 NHS graduate, won an AP scholar award with distinction, according to... Read more

Photo provided by A. Kim “Tobacco free is up to me.” Many students have seen the posters declaring this line and depicting a familiar student athlete for the seasonal IHSAA Role Models program. But not many may have seen a different poster by a different organization with a different student: junior Abby Kim. Kim was chosen to be a Role Model, not for a sport, but rather, for theatre. The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, home of the new Palladium concert hall, holds a similar Role Models program to that of the IHSAA. High school students were chosen by their schools to represent their... Read more

It’s no secret that everybody wants to support breast cancer awareness, what with all the bracelets people wear, but the girls soccer team decided to take things one step further. One of the player’s moms has a friend being affected, most of us do unfortunately, and all of the players were moved. “The thing is it could happen to any of us at anytime, and we were all touched,” said junior, Brooke Denny. All in all, the team raised 600 dollars. Although they’ve supported the foundation before, Coach Brady told the girls he sees this event becoming a new and exciting... Read more
