There’s more than hope for “Hope For Haiti Now”

Any CD where the proceeds go towards a charity or relief effort are worth anyone’s time and couple bucks, but Hope For Haiti Now is truly a special mix of both heart-wrenching and up-lifting songs that feature the devastation and hope in Haiti. The first album to be solely sold electronically, for only $7.99 on iTunes, Hope For Haiti Now is well worth your time and little amount of money. The 20 songs on the charity album show the contrast of destruction versus rebuilding, despair versus prayer, and loneliness versus togetherness. Songs titled “Motherless Child”, “Driven to Tears”,... No golden statue for Dear John

Image from www.tengossip.com. My older sister was reading Nicholas Sparks’ bestseller, Dear John, about a month ago. She accidentally left it at my house, so I took the liberty of taking it for a quick read. A quick read it was. The book ended with me throwing it across the room and shedding a few sad tears. When books get turned into movies, I like to read the book before I see the movie so I can compare after. I always go into the movie with low expectations, knowing that movies can never live up to books. But in Nicholas Sparks’ case, I went in assuming that the movie would be just... Read more
Artists like Andrew Ryan save the music scene

In a world where the likes of Lady Gaga rule the music charts, those of us who appreciate a little acoustic guitar once in a while could use some help. Pop artist Andrew Ryan lends a hand with his new EP Waiting for Paris. Andrew Ryan’s Waiting for Paris album cover, from www.myspace.com/andrewryanmusic I’m always a little skeptical when coming across new musicians. I like familiar things. But Ryan’s album is proof that change can be good. The first track, “I’d Follow You,” was my favorite right away. It’s a simple love song. Although I would normally... Read more
Holmes packs an exaggerated punch

Sitting in the Great Escape theatre for my own personal premier of Sherlock Holmes, I mentally prepared myself what I expected to be an intellectually challenging film. What I received was not what I was expecting. The movie quickly proved that it was to be classified as an action film, which is not so close to the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I suppose with Robert Downey Jr. posing as Sherlock, I shouldn’t have expected anything more, but I still had my moment of wishful thinking. Doyle’s original works tended to leave the reader lost up until the last possible moment, where the mystery... Read more

For the Academic http://www.internet-resources.com/writers/wrlinks-wordstuff.htm Mrs. Steele, famed AP Comp/Lit, etymology, and English teacher, would drool. This nifty page lists links to the best sites for grammar information, dictionaries, quotations, and the like. There’s even a “MEGALIST OF WORDS” link. Whatever the heck that is. For the Academic Time-waster http://www.youtube.com/user/RedLetterMedia#p/u/7/uJarz7BYnHA This is probably more appropriate for geeks/dorks/nerds, not academics (there is a difference), but nevertheless, it takes a certain kind of sense of humor... Animal doesn’t live up to radio hype

To those who routinely wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy, Ke$ha is a common name. The new singer has recently been burning up the iTunes charts and playlists across the country. I’m not usually the type to listen to popular “radio music.” I’m honestly much more into pop bands whose music will never reach the mainstream. But admittedly, the second I heard Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK,” I knew I found a new favorite song even though I had no reason to like it. It was pretty generic sounding. It didn‘t relate to my life whatsoever. I guess music just works like that sometimes. When... Read more
Sci-fi Avatar makes a splash at the box office

The hype for the newly released sci-fi thriller, Avatar, is well worth the hubbub. Maintaining a high standard was definitely on the mind director James Cameron as he was spending the movie’s $237 million budget. The story begins in 2154, with the introduction of a Marine, Jake Sulley. His identical twin brother had been chosen for a series of experiments on the planet Pandora using a surragate to gain an extremely rare metal that is very valuable on Earth. Jake’s brother dies right before he is deployed to Pandora, and Jake is sent in his place because he has the same DNA as his brother,... Read more
